Even though this is ostensibly a "Souvenir" deck of the "Forbidden City", Hochman, in his "Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards" categories's it as a "War" deck: W 37. And it would be hard to argue with him. The pack was released shortly after the Boxer Rebellion was crushed in 1901 and the hearts suit in particular show gruesome sights of the trials and executions of boxers in the aftermath of that bloody  uprising. The pack has 52 cards + 1 Joker and an information leaflet, giving detailed descriptions of every card in each of the four suits. Hochman tells us the deck was only made and sold in the USA. Very hard to find today, especially in this condition with original box and gilt edges .It doesn't actually tell us so but I believe the deck was made by the USPCC for the Grimes-Stassforth Co.
