Lovely condition these, complete with rules and original box. There is a little water damage to the back of the box but it hasn't seeped through to the cards and they are in fantastic condition, in fact the best I have ever seen for this hugely popular and now very collectable game, despite the subject being offensive to many. The drawings and storylines of the game were taken from a series of books as shown on the back of the box- the first - written in about 1890, was titled, "The adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwog". Written by Bertha Upton and illustrated by her daughter Florence, The books were incredibly successful; the "Harry Potter" of their day. Florence Upton died in 1922, by which time the "Golliwog" character was becoming embroiled in controversy as it was deemed degrading to people with dark skins. Whatever your stance on this subject, whether you think it offensive or just a delightful child's game, one thing is for certain, Florence Upton was appalled at how their innocent creation was being portrayed. Shortly before her death she wrote. "I am frightened when I read the fearsome etymology some deep, dark minds can see in his name."
